Elisa is currently not taking new clients Elisa Nebolsine has been working with children, adolescents, and their families for the past decade and a half. A graduate of Smith College School for Social Work, she holds a master’s degree in clinical social work with a concentration in children and adolescents. In her practice, Cognitive Therapy for Kids, she provides individual and group therapy to children and adolescents, consulting to professionals, and supervision and teaching to schools, agencies, and mental health centers in the DC area and nationally.

Elisa was named a “top therapist” (as rated by her peers) in Washingtonian magazine (July 09) in four separate categories. While her primary interest is in anxiety disorders, she also works with other childhood difficulties. She is a cognitive behavioral therapist.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a problem- focused therapy that helps children and adolescents become their own therapists. In its simplest form, CBT seeks to help children and adolescents recognize the negative patterns of thinking that perpetuate their moods and work to change their cognitions.

Elisa has extensive training in CBT. She is a graduate of the Beck Institute’s Extramural Training Program, and has had the privilege of training with the founder of Cognitive Therapy, Aaron Beck, MD. Through the Beck Institute she has received comprehensive training in CBT with children. She is also an Accredited Cognitive Therapist (ACT) through the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, a rigorous credential begun by Aaron Beck in order to mark a “truly qualified and effective cognitive therapist.”

Elisa also has significant training and supervision in play therapy, sand tray therapy, psychodynamic treatment, and group therapy. Additionally, she has experience in inpatient psychiatric settings, day treatment centers, schools, and AD/HD clinics.

In addition to her private practice, Elisa is a clinical supervisor for the Beck Institute in Philadelphia through which she provides CBT supervision to therapists across the country. She is a consultant to the District of Columbia Public Schools “DC START” program where she teaches CBT to clinicians. Elisa also provides consultation and supervision to local schools and centers on use of CBT with children and adolescents.
