Kate McClain Social Skills

Kate McClain, owner and lead facilitator

Group Meets at Cherrydale Baptist Church
3910 Lorcom Lane Arlington, VA 22207

Kate’s social skills groups allow kids to improve social, communication, and play skills in a small group of similar-age peers. The main goal of the group is to help children feel confident and successful in social situations by providing a structured, supportive environment in which to explore and play. Each week, we play both seated and active games, eat a snack together, have a lesson/group discussion time, and go out to the playground (weather permitting).

In addition to social and communication skills, we work on speech, fine, and gross motor skills as much as possible. Groups serve children with a variety of challenges, including HFA, PDD/NOS, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, and sensory processing/integration issues, as well as those without an official label who are having trouble making friends.

Each group consists of a facilitator and an assistant, and is limited to a maximum of 6 members to ensure an optimal amount of attention for each child in the group. All groups are held at a church in North Arlington. Our meeting space includes two spacious, sunny classrooms and an onsite playground. Please see my website for days, times, & descriptions of groups broken down by age, and contact me with any questions!

Announcing a new fitness and coordination social skills group for 6 – 8 year olds in McLean, VA!

Kitty Phillips, LCSW and Annette Kielkopf, LPC are joining together to create an exciting new group for young children with developmental issues including ADD/ADHD, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Asperger’s Syndrome and Anxiety/Depression. These therapists’ unique dual backgrounds in fitness/strength training and yoga create a synergy to advance development in both mind and body. The group will focus on:

Developing social skills including reciprocal communication skills, empathy, and pragmatic language skills
Developing self-regulation within a group including coordinating movement and body-in-space and learning to be both a listener and a talker even in times of stress/anxiety, and learning to self-calm when group leader’s focus is on the entire group rather than on the individual child
Developing the ability to handle both winning and losing and the ability to both be and appear calm in either circumstance, learning to think in
“shades of gray” and to self-talk through the all or nothing thinking that impacts social behavior
Developing core motor skills for success in sports specific training such as balance, cardiovascular strength, core strength and flexibility. Introduction to various sports in a non-competitive and engaging approach. Themed sessions (based on group participants areas of interest/affect), charades or “telephone” games during plyometrics, trivia during pilates, and hat relays are only the start of the fun! Become a character in your favorite board game as you learn to do squats, crunches, pushups and bridges through the life sized game board.

Spring session meets on Mondays March 19 – Monday June 11, 2012 from 4-5:00 PM. Location is McLean Professional Park, 1485 Chain Bridge Road, Suite 203, McLean, VA 22101. Most clients will find sessions covered under their mental health insurance plan. Payment can be made by credit card or by check. Please call 703-304-7698 for more information or to register.
